The RAF’s A400M Atlas has become a key part of the UK’s air mobility fleet - supporting Operation SHADER and its contribution to the international coalition against Daesh in Iraq and eastern Syria.

Following the retirement of the RAF’s C-130J Hercules from the operation, the A400M took over the role of transporting personnel and freight in theatre, with the transition beginning in 2023.

From its forward presence in the Middle East, the RAF Air Mobility Force uses the Atlas to sustain UK military operations across the region, with regular flights carrying cargo and passengers. The A400M’s ability to carry substantial loads over long distances makes it a vital logistical link between the UK and deployed forces.

This patch celebrates the Atlas’ supporting role in one of the RAF’s longest-running overseas operations. Designed by the deployed crews, RAF Akrotiri’s badge is recognised through the inclusion of a rather cool-looking flamingo!
